Teacher and Piano Teacher Invent New Technology That Is Traditional piano lessons teach musical notation first. But, most children don't want to wade through the hieroglyphics before they get to play. They want to play now! Piano teachers everywhere are astonished by this new method of teaching children how to play piano....and have them love it! No more screaming and complaining about piano lessons. "The Solution Is Finally Here"
Dear Parents, Grandparents and Music Lovers, I wanted to share with you WHY Piano Wizard is revolutionary in its approach, and to dispel many preconceptions and misconceptions about music and music education. So, if you want YOUR children to learn to play piano, or if you want to learn yourself, please read on! What Piano Wizard is…. Piano Wizard, can be thought
of as “training wheels for the piano”. You wouldn't put a 3-year-old on a ten-speed bike at the top of a hill, give him a shove and expect him to learn to love biking. Crazy as that sounds, they do that to children with traditional music education all the time. Training wheels give kids confidence and freedom and even let them ride bikes with their older friends. Then, as the child acquires his bearings and balance the wheels can be gradually raised until he is riding the bike virtually independent of the training wheels, which can even be removed at that point. The same principles can be applied when learning to play the piano. Some of us need different tools and methods, including this kind of game, to help us learn and practice more easily. It makes the difficult parts of starting to learn to play the piano easier and a lot more fun. "Learning
To Play The Piano Has Never Been This Easy" This game can give your child, or you, the same guidance, comfort and security as he starts his musical journey that training wheels did for you when you learned to ride a bike. Like a bike, music, once mastered, can take a child anywhere he wants to go. And remember, a child learns to ride a bike by DOING, not with diagrams and physics theories of maintaining forward equilibrium on a vehicle with one stationary and one movable wheel. When you want your child to learn to ride a bike you simply prevent him from crashing and burning, let him have fun, and nature took its course. The same can be true if you want him to learn to play the piano. And "play" is the operative word here... Play is a higher form of learning found only in mammals and birds and is essential to a child's development as a human being. The philosophy of Piano Wizard is "music before theory". Piano Wizard teaches piano the way a child learns. Traditional piano lessons teach musical notation first. But most children, and adults, don't want to wade through the hieroglyphics before they get to play. They want to play NOW!
Piano Wizard combines the fun of a video game with the fundamentals of piano lessons. That means your child can sit up to a keyboard today and play anything from Bach to Bon Jovi. What once felt like practice now feels like play. With Piano Wizard, your child will be playing the piano the instant the game is started. She will learn intuitively (through the game objects) to hit the right note at the right time. Gradually, as her skill level advances, so does the game and she is gently exposed to musical notation when she's ready and at her pace. Before you know it, your child has learned to read music... and enjoys it! In fact, Piano Wizard transcends years of musical theory, history, and an archaic confusing musical notation tradition, and reveals in living color the underlying MATHMATICAL and SPATIAL logic of music. Namely there are 2 basic dimensions when playing the piano or any instrument, pitch (which musical note - color-coded for easy identification in the game - in a logical one-to-one relationship) and rhythm or time, (revealed by showing the original logic of space between notes and displaying them before they are to be played to show the correct time to play them). Because
a child can see the note coming and ANTICIPATE when There ARE other dimensions of music, that the game does NOT teach like timbre, attack, dynamics, and the rich musical conventions. We inherited that constitute harmonic theory from those before us, but Pitch and Time are the muscles, the flesh, the organs of music. They are the skeleton upon which all the rest hangs. Get that right and you have a basic form from which you can BEGIN to create great music. Piano Wizard teaches the ABCs of playing music and reading music easily and lets others teach the grammar and theory of great music once the basics have been mastered.
And Piano Wizard can teach pitch and time like no other. Through the color and movement of the game, the underlying musical logic embedded in the melodic lines, the rhythmic pulses, the harmonic combinations of pitch and time of Bach or any other composer is revealed transparently and intuitively to the child in all of us and absorbed into our thinking, into our hands, and our hearts as unconsciously and as completely as we absorb the logic and vocabulary of our native languages. Bach famously said 300 years ago, (modestly), that all he did was hit the right note at the right time. He did more than that of course, but that is still the best place to start when learning to play a piece of music on the piano. Piano Wizard can give that start to anybody, painlessly, joyfully, and continuously. And because the game uses MIDI technology (more on that later), there is no limit to the music that can be plugged into the game. It is a training tool for life. Even
with Piano Wizard you will STILL need to PRACTICE! With Piano Wizard, the fundamentals of piano lessons are there, they're just displayed in an intuitive, colorful, video game format that's never been seen before that moves at your child's pace... and it's fun! When you play this game it doesn't even feel like you're learning to play the piano, but you are. What's more, the game is ever changing according to your preferences which means you'll never tire of the game. At the beginner and intermediate levels, children can choose from four different fantasy worlds to play in. Throughout the game they can change the speed that the piece of music is played at, the instrument sounds, the skill level, whether to use just one of their hands or both, and more. "The
hand eye coordination starts immediately and soon To begin, you pick a song from over 100 that come with the game. At the beginner level, each color-coded musical note is represented by a different character (ie. dinosaur egg, butterfly cocoon, space ship, etc.) that corresponds to that themed, fantasy world. The colored piano keyboard (that matches the colored piano keyboard that comes with the game) will be pictured across the top of your computer screen. As the song plays, the characters representing musical notes start at the bottom of the screen and float up to the colored piano keyboard to their color-corresponding musical notes. As each character lands on one of the keys shown on the colored keyboard, your child presses the corresponding key on their own colored keyboard in order to hear the song. Children of all ages simply wait for the fish, flying saucers or eggs to float to the top to hit the same colored keys on their colored keyboard. They experience instant success playing real music with Piano Wizard. After all, for a child, it isn't about learning to play the piano. It's about breaking dinosaur eggs or setting butterflies free!
As your child's skill level advances, the colored piano keyboard at the top of the computer screen rotates from its parallel position to a position that is perpendicular to your child's own keyboard along the left side of the computer screen. The fantasy world is still present and the musical notes are still represented by characters, but now, instead of coming from the bottom of the screen, the characters come from the right of the screen and your child begins to get accustomed to reading music in its traditional horizontal format and looking ahead, to the right, to see which notes are coming up next..
Once your child has mastered the Intermediate Level, he can move up to the Transition Level. At this stage of musical development, the fantasy world your child has been playing in, as well as its corresponding characters, are replaced by traditional music notation. However, the music notes are still colored to match your child's colored piano keyboard.
In the most advanced stage of the game, when your child is ready, all backgrounds and colors are removed completely. Because your child learned to play the music first in the first three levels of Piano Wizard, hand/eye coordination and skills like pitch, rhythm and reflexes will be second nature by this point. At the Advanced Level your child is now able to view notation as a map to playing music, rather than as frustrating hieroglyphics.
By the time your child is competent with the Advanced Level, he'll have pitch and time perfected. But pitch and time, just hitting the right note at the right time, is not MUSIC, anymore than the frame of a house is a home. Music is art, it is the phrasing, dynamics, the touch, technique, the posture, the interpretation, the emotion, the passion. Music is “between the notes” as Jimi Hendrix famously said. Thus,
this game does not, cannot, will not replace teachers. Human teachers are still necessary to teach the art of music. Human teachers, artists who have usually given decades of their lives studying every dimension of music and usually for the best reason of all, LOVE, and who have been dying to share the ART of music with their students, instead of the MECHANICS of which note to hit when. With traditional piano instruction it is the equivalent of Shakespeare scholars teaching typing. Let Piano Wizard teach the typing, the framework and let the teachers do what they do best. Our nightmare would be for kids to think that this game is all you need to learn to play the piano. Any person learning to play piano will hit bottlenecks soon enough, in his fingering, his technique, which will inhibit his top speeds and scores in the game unless he gets a “Piano Wizard Coach” (ooops, I meant piano teacher). If he gets interested in music by having FUN with it, he will inevitably have questions. He'll be curious about musical notation, sharps, flats, musical theory, history, and will be ultimately drawn into continuing this musical journey not by a video game, but by music itself, one of the most beautiful, sacred means of self-expression, by a window into the minds of Bach, Chopin, Beethoven and Van Halen. And, yes, I said Van Halen.
Because Piano Wizard works with MIDI technology MIDI technology... remember I mentioned that earlier? MIDI is an acronym for Musical Instrument Digital Interface and is a standard protocol for sending data between musical devices regardless of what those devices may be (ie. computers, keyboards, sound modules and drum machines, etc.). It's basically a song file that gets transferred to your musical device, in this case Piano Wizard, so that you can play that piece of music. When you find a song you want to play and load that MIDI file into Piano Wizard, Piano Wizard reads all the information for the song and then displays the piece of music you loaded in the game! Just like the more than 100 songs that come with the game (which are MIDI files as well) it shows you which notes to play, on your colored piano keyboard, and when, so that you can master your new musical undertaking. Because MIDI is the standard for musical devices there are literally thousands of MIDI files (and probably many more) that can be found and downloaded from Internet libraries. And, because Piano Wizard works with MIDI technology, the possiblities are endless for the types of music and the musical pieces you can play on Piano Wizard. With Piano Wizard, your child can download and play any MIDI song from virtually any artist, whether classical, pop, rock, country, or alternative. The possibilities are endless. Talk about fun!
